Relaxed energy study shows range of possible fixes By Ben Beversluis (HER)
The at the crack returns are in that show the scope of energy retrofit needs in 25 pilot homes in Holland. The Home Energy Retrofit check program has been busy in the background as home energy audits were completed. Furnaces, appliances, insulation, windows and other issues were analyzed. Beginning later this week, recommended fixes will be presented to the 25 homeowners who agreed to evaluation fly a system that could be used for city-wide home energy upgrades to save money but also increase home value, safeness and comfort. The pilot is a step toward implementing Holland’s Community Energy Plan. That plan calls for – middle various projects to slash energy use – retrofits of 200 to 300 homes a year over two decades. Retrofitting can draw in anything from sealing air leaks to adding insulation to replacing furnaces. The pilot project seeks to develop a possible system for the large-scale testing, financing and construction. Key questions in the pilot include: What types of fixes would most homes trouble. How much energy savings would they produce. In a peek at preliminary answers, a report from the city’s contractor for the pilot shows these needs total the 25 pilot homes:. 17 – furnace or boiler replacement 12 – air conditioning replacement 16 – ring false heater replacement 24 – smart thermostats 25 – lighting improvement 22 – plumbing retrofit 13 – madden insulation 7 – attic insulation 11 – rim joist sealing 10 – window... The pilot is designed to cast a cross-section of homes, so the recommendations give a snapshot of possible needs in a city-wide project. The pilot has also revealed workable issues for a wide-scale retrofit project, including scheduling problems and the varied needs and wants among homeowners. Miller said that in addition to wanting to save energy, most of the pilot homeowners had specific issues they hoped to have addressed – drafty rooms, roof problems, inadequacy of heat in part of a house, a furnace with problems. Those issues, along with finding a funding system, have delayed the control. Miller acknowledged the plan originally called for construction underway by now. And GreenHome Institute from Grand Rapids is providing vigour audits and labeling consistent with another city task force’s project to rate home energy performance. The next step in the fly is visits with each homeowner to present the upgrade options with potential costs and savings. “The reports will have a good, better, excellent type scenarios for them to choose from,” Miller said. More expensive options typically will offer more energy savings and more soothe. “Who knows what homeowners actually decide to do, what they’ll choose to move forward with, but they are going to have these options,” Miller said. Miller said commencing estimates show potential energy savings of 20 to 40 percent in the pilot homes, with dollar savings between $300 and $1,300 a year. Finally, the energy savings will depend on the improvements homeowners invest in. Task force members meeting with Miller said they hoped homeowners will be encouraged to opt the “best” option, to give the most impact. That would move forward the city energy plan as well as boost the see’s efforts in Georgetown University Energy.
